The fourth episode of our webinar series will explore everything related to home based oral care from the perspective of special needs dentistry.
During the previous episodes of this webinar series, it became clear that each dental discipline deals with a unique set of patients with unique demands and challenges when it comes to home based oral care. However, there’s one specialty that is the embodiment of unique demands: special needs dentistry. Special needs dentistry is defined in literature as the discipline that deals with “The improvement of oral health of individuals and groups in society who have a physical, sensory, intellectual, mental, medical, emotional or social impairment or disability or, more often, a combination of a number of these factors” (Gallagher & Fiske, 2007). Can we identify challenges, barriers, and demands that unify this group despite the heterogeneity of the individual patients? How do we tailor our treatment to such a broad range of patients?
